Biography

My name is Josef Spitzer and I'm a composer and a conductor. I was educated as an instrumentalist (bas-flugelhorn, violin) in the Army Music School. Later I worked as an arranger and a bandleader for a dance orchestra. I graduated The Prague Conservatoire with a concentration in Conducting and Composition in 1964. During my studies I focused on new-age composition trends (series music, aleatoric music, electronic collages) which I discovered during my Darmstad Study stays and kept coming across at the annual Warsaw Autumn Festival. I was also a runner up in a competition organized by Czech Television that was looking for a new music director. As a composer I mostly lean towards the free noncommercial production, however, I also collaborate with various film music production teams specializing in scenic music. In my own studio I devote my time to independent projects mostly experimenting with formal structures.
